Zong has become the first mobile operator in the world to commercially deploy ZTE’s high-power 8T8R Ultra-Broadband Radio (HP 8T8R UBR) and Digital Intelligent Antenna (DIA) system — a move set to reshape how mobile networks handle capacity, efficiency, and coverage.
The launch brings an 8x120W power output for FDD dual-band operation (1800MHz and 2100MHz), the primary frequency bands for Zong’s network. This is the highest power ever achieved in such a solution, and it’s arriving first in Pakistan before anywhere else.
Replacing Multiple Units With One
Traditionally, telecom towers rely on several remote radio units (RRUs) to manage traffic. ZTE’s new design condenses this into a single high-integration unit, cutting the need for RRUs by up to 67%. This not only reduces tower clutter and antenna space requirements but also lowers installation complexity and maintenance demands.
Beamforming and Next-Gen Readiness
When paired with ZTE’s DIA antenna, the system supports software-defined beamforming — enabling either two 4T4R cells for existing setups or one 8T8R cell for future network generations. This adaptability means operators can optimize performance now while preparing for upcoming technologies without additional hardware overhauls.
In some constrained environments, Zong is deploying the system in a “4-2-2” configuration: one 4T4R cell alongside two 2T2R cells, offering flexible coverage while managing power and space limits.
Performance Gains That Matter
Early results from Zong’s rollout are notable. The company reports a 34% boost in average daily network capacity, an 83% improvement during peak hours, and significant jumps in user experience metrics — up 173% daily and 115% in busy-hour conditions.
A Step Toward Smarter, Leaner Networks
For Zong, the benefits go beyond speed and capacity. This single-unit approach reduces operational costs, streamlines expansion, and simplifies rural deployments where site resources are tight.
ZTE and Zong say this is only the start. The two companies plan to expand the deployment nationwide and test additional high-efficiency configurations, aiming to set new standards for mobile networks in emerging markets.
