Windows 11 Tests Seamless Android App Resuming, Starting with Spotify

Microsoft is quietly experimenting with a new Windows 11 feature that could make switching between your phone and PC feel more natural. The company is testing the ability to pick up Android app activity on your desktop, beginning with Spotify as the first supported app.

A Closer Look at How It Works

If you start listening to a track on Spotify’s Android app, Windows 11 will now surface a “Resume from your phone” prompt in its notification center. Clicking it launches Spotify on your PC—either in the desktop app or, if you don’t have it installed, after prompting you to download it—so playback continues without interruption.

The feature is powered by Phone Link, Microsoft’s app that pairs Android devices with Windows PCs. Once your devices are connected, Windows keeps track of supported app activity and offers to “hand off” what you were doing on your phone.

Microsoft Takes a Page from Apple

Apple users will recognize this concept. macOS and iOS have offered Handoff for years, letting users move seamlessly between devices for everything from browsing Safari tabs to drafting emails. Microsoft’s version, however, is starting small: Spotify is currently the only supported app, and the feature doesn’t yet extend to web pages or productivity apps.

Still, the addition suggests Microsoft is serious about closing the gap between mobile and PC workflows.

What’s Next

Microsoft hasn’t shared a timeline for wider rollout or announced additional apps, but it’s easy to see the potential: resuming emails in Outlook, continuing a document in Word, or even carrying over reading sessions from mobile browsers.

The feature briefly appeared in a now-removed Windows Build 2025 demo, hinting that it could become a central part of Microsoft’s ecosystem strategy as the company pushes deeper integration between Android and Windows.

For now, it’s available only to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels, so early adopters will be the first to try it out.
