Former PTI leader and CM Mahmood Khan confirmed the decision, stating, “We reached consensus on the name of Justice Arshad Hussain Shah,” following a meeting with opposition leader Akram Khan Durrani.
The appointment process began after KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali sent letters to Mahmood and Durrani, invoking Article 224(1A) of the Constitution. The governor emphasized the constitutional obligation, stating that the process should be concluded within three days.
On Sunday, Justice (r) Arshad Hussain Shah was appointed as the caretaker chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, succeeding the late Azam Khan.
The decision to appoint Justice Arshad Hussain Shah comes a day after the demise of caretaker CM Muhammad Azam Khan due to a heart attack. He had been appointed in January following the dissolution of the provincial assembly by the PTI-led government.
The untimely death triggered a constitutional crisis in KP, prompting accelerated meetings on Sunday to select the new chief executive for the province, according to official sources.
